to learn more about vegetarianism.
Elevate your heart rate, not just today but everyday! Take a
brisk walk, jog or hike to keep your heart rate elevated.
Have you seen this month's
Vegetable of the Month?
Rhizomes are the vegetable
of the month.
It's National Taco Day. Here's a recipe for Easy
Taco Casserole
Lower the fat in your home-made baked goods. Try using equal amounts
of applesauce for fat or oil in a recipe.
Coordinator's Tip #2
Enjoy Fall, get outside, see the leaves change color, and remember
to eat fruits and vegetables as brightly colored as the leaves.
Skip the soda. Drink a 100% fruit juice beverage, low-fat milk,
or water.
National School Lunch Week is October 10 through 14.
Coordinator's Tip #1
Tune out during TV commercial breaks. Try jump roping or lifting
5-pound weights during the breaks.
Take advantage of fall's colorful produce. Go apple picking at
your local orchard.
Grocery shopping doesn't have to be a chore. Treat this errand
as your personal walking track. Walk in laps starting with the
outermost lanes and walk your way towards the middle of the store.
Eating pizza tonight? Why not go with an all veggie pie? Enjoy
your slice with a small side salad with low-fat dressing.
Today is Oatmeal Day. Why not enjoy this nourishing food for breakfast.
Try adding some fresh fruit, raisins, or dried cranberries.
Pumpkins are not just for decoration. They're delicious AND nutritious.
Try out these tasty pumpkin recipes at
www.fruitsandveggiesmatter.gov.
Want to burn more calories during the day? Make sure you're walking
or pacing while you're on the telephone. Every step counts.
Take a hike. A nature hike. Go exploring in your neighborhood
for nature trails and see what foliage is left to fall.
National Health Education Week is October 20 through 26.
Coordinator's Tip #3
Eat a better snack. Having a cup of grapes will leave you feeling
fuller than a handful of chips.
Make your life easier and healthier too! Keep a bowl of fruit
handy. Pack your lunch the night before. Buy a simple cookbook
with healthy recipes, and try a new one each week.
Out of sight, out of mind? Not if you place a bowl of fresh fruit
on your counter. Seeing the fruit will encourage you and your
family to get a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables everyday.
Persimmons are the fruit
of the month.
Arrange a field trip with your neighborhood kids to the pumpkin
patch. During the car ride, be sure to tell the kids how pumpkins
are grown and how good they are to eat because they have essential
vitamins and minerals.
Skipping breakfast? Not today! Breakfast doesn't have to be a
sit-down affair. Check out these tips for breakfast on the
run.
Coordinator's Tip #4
Celebrate Wild Foods Day. Try a vegetable or fruit that you don't
normally buy, and share it with your family and friends.
Don't drive your kids to school. Instead, walk with them. This
way you and the kids will get some exercise and some quality time
together.
Happy Halloween. Give trick-or-treaters healthy snacks such as
individual bags of dried fruit.
